Being one of the largest youth organization in the world, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), has been working all over the Country to develop the personality of the youth and to engage them in nation-building activities.
What Is Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS)?
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) is an initiative of Govt. of India under Department of Youth Affairs aiming to develop the personality and leadership qualities of the youth and to engage them in nation-building activities. It focuses on developing values of good citizenship, thinking and behaving in secular ways, skill development and helping youth to adopt a productive and organized behavior.
Currently, NYKS has around three lakhs youth clubs / Mahila Mandals with the membership of around 85 lakhs spread across the country in over 600 districts.
- The main objectives of NYK is to develop the personality and leadership qualities of the youth and to engage them in nation-building activities. It focuses on developing values of good citizenship, thinking and behaving in secular ways, skill development and helping youth to adopt a productive and organized behavior.
- To involve the rural youth in nation building activities.
- To develop such skills and values in them with which they become responsible and productive citizens of a modern, secular and technological nation.
- Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan has been working in various fronts of youth development with a variety of youth programmes of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and certain special programmes in coordination and cooperation of other ministries.
How NYKS Functions?
It is functioning through District Youth Coordinator working in each District and with 2 National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers in each block. There are 29 State Level Zonal offices to oversee concerned districts and block level functions. NYKS has a headquarter in New Delhi.
Important Programmes of NYKS
Youth Club Development Program (YCDP)
YCDP aims at strengthening the existing network of youth clubs through its five day program involving 10 campaigners who cover 50 Youth Clubs.
Training on Youth Leadership and Community Development (TYLCD)
TYLCD programmes aims at enhancing capacity of young people to take leadership to help others to live a meaningful life and contribute towards nation building.
Theme Based Awareness and Education Programme
Theme Based Awareness and Education Program aims at creating awareness among youth about the importance of health and family welfare, sanitation, environment conservation and other issues of social concern.
Promotion of Sports
The program has two components, namely, 1. providing sports material to youth clubs, valued at about Rs. 2000 per club and 2. assistance for organization of inter youth Clubs Sports Meets.
Skill Up-gradation Programme (SUTP) for Women
The SUTP aims at developing vocational skills of rural youth and enabling them to supplement their family income as well as enhancing their self esteem.
Promotion of Folk Art and Culture
Promotion of Folk Art and Culture is a one-day programme that aims at promoting folk art and culture with special reference to folk theater, folk songs, folk dances, folklore etc.
Observance of Days of National and International Importance
This programme aims at generation of awareness about critical issues of national and international importance.
Youth Convention and Yuva Kriti
Youth Convention and Yuva Kriti programme is organized annually by all District NYKS and also at the State level, to provide opportunity and platform to rural youth leaders to display products and express themselves, share experiences and suggest best practices for the youth empowerment.
Awards to Outstanding Youth Clubs
This programme aims at recognizing the outstanding voluntary services rendered by the youth clubs. The awards are conferred at District, State and National level.
Programmes Organized by NYKS with the Funding from National Programme for Youth Adolescent Development (NPYAD)
The scheme titled National Programme for Youth Adolescent Development (NPYAD) has been formulated for avoiding delays in availability of funds to the field level and institutionalizing participation of State Governments in project formulation and its implementation. NYKS takes advantage of organizing programmes funded by NPYAD to its beneficiary that a majority comes from NYKS.
Definition of youth and adolescent: The ‘youth’ would cover persons belonging to the age group of 15 to 29 years and ‘adolescent’ would cover persons in the age group of 10-19 years.
National Integration Camps (NIC)
The objectives of NIC programme is to promote national integration by bringing together youth from different parts of the country on common platform, giving them opportunity to understand cultural heritage of the country and enabling them to recognize threads of unity in diversity which bind all Indians together.
Youth Leadership and Personality Development Programme (YLPDP)
The objective of the Programme is to train the youth leaders and to equip them with necessary qualities to assume responsibility for the village and youth clubs and to act as catalysts for socio-economic and political-cultural debvelopment of the villages.
Life Skill Training for Adolescents
The objective of the programmes is to develop among adolescents the behavior which will empower them to make healthy choices, to strengthen their Life Skills to cope up with the risky situations that they encounter in their lives and to manage adolescent reproductive sexual health issues and concerns.
Adventure Camps (Promotion of Adventure)
The programme aims at encouraging spirit of adventure and risk-taking amongst youth.
Programmes organized in Collaboration with Other Ministries
Tribal Youth Exchange Programme (TYEP)
The programme is being organized every year with funding from the Ministry of Home Affairs. In this Programme, tribal youth drawn from areas affected by Left-wing extremist activities are taken to other parts of the country to sensitize them to rich cultural heritage of the country to expose them to development activities and to enable them to develop emotional linkage with the people in other parts of the country.
Adolescent Health and Development Project (AHDP)
The programme is being organized with funding from UNFPA with the objective of empowering out-of-school adolescents. The project is being implemented in various parts of the country including 10 pilot projects in Maharshtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar. Adolescents are organized in Teen Clubs and the extension work is done through trained Peer educators.
Projects on Awareness and Education for Prevention of Drug Abuse and Alcoholism
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, has sanctioned two projects in Punjab and may extend soon to other states.
Other Important Initiative of NYKS
Punarjagran (Rejuvenation) Initiative
Punarjagaran initiative ia year-long awakening movement among youth to involve them in nation-building activities, directly covering 100 districts, was launched in October 2nd, 2014.
Activities Under Swatchh Bharat Mission
NYKS has undertaken a number of initiatives under the Swachh Bharat Mission through 623 District NYKS and 29 Zonal Officess, with involvement of 12,000 NYC volunteers and 2.95 lakhs Youth clubs and Mahila Mandala, focusing participation of all sections of society to bring about mass awareness and a lasting behavioral change to acheive the goal.
The members of Youth Clubs and Mahila Mandals have been undertaking special cleanliness driven in their respective area. The issues of cleanliness and sanitation education have been made integral part of NYKS programmes.
NYKS has launched an Online platform for Registration of youth clubs, thereby taking itself closer to the youth and at the same time, bringing transparency in the entire process.
